New Residence & Pool House
Napa, California

Following the complete loss of their newly purchased home to the Napa fires, all that remained on our clients’ property was a pool and a serpentine stone landscape wall.  We took our cue from these site elements to organize and connect the pool house to the main house with two new stone walls which create a welcoming entry and expand the indoor / outdoor living experience.  The stone walls anchor core functions and contrast with the open gesture of uplifted roof forms and clerestory windows that celebrate sweeping views of the vineyards and orchards in the valleys below.  The lower serpentine wall was extended using local stone to embrace an exterior patio at the crest of the hill where the old structure was, a response to zoning criteria for hillside development in view corridors.  The interior spaces open onto both the patio and the view under shade and vine trellises via expansive glass doors.  Sustainable aspects of the project include:  fire resistant construction throughout, locally-sourced stone, metal roofs, a net-energy exporter solar array with battery backup, and water storage.
